Ocular Disease: Styes

What is a stye?

A stye (or sty) is an inflammation of a hair follicle (eyelash) or gland on the eyelid. The inflammation is typically caused by a bacterial infection (staphylococcal). The pimple-like inflammation appears on either the outside or inside of the lid. Some believe that styes may also be caused by stress.

Symptoms

Physical signs include redness, swelling, and a small pimple-like abscess on the eyelid. Other symptoms may include watery-eyes, photophobia, tenderness, or pain.

Risk Factors

  • Repetitive rubbing of the eye and nose

  • Stress

Treatment

The application of a hot compress may help to ease some symptoms. Antibiotic drops or ointments may be used to fight the infection and help relieve symptoms. In some instances, no treatment may be required and the stye is simply allowed to drain and heal on its own. If drainage does not occur naturally or with other treatments, an eyecare practitioner may lance the stye. Chronic problems with styes may require oral antibiotics.

Note: DO NOT pop a stye like a pimple as the infection may the spread. Simply allow the stye to drain naturally or with the aid of your doctor.

Prevention
  • Hand washing / proper hygiene

  • Limit unnecessary contact between the hands and eyes

  • Stress management
